Anxiety
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is normal and is typically described as a feeling of apprehension or dread in situations where there is no actual real threat and although it doesn’t feel like it, is relatively harmless. The feeling is unpleasant, however it is necessary for our survival in certain situations, for example before a job interview, taking a driving test or taking an exam. It keeps us alert. Most people experience stress and anxiety at some point in their lives. Where stress is usually a response to an external cause, such as a presentation, or work deadline or having an argument with someone, it usually disappears or dissipates once the situation is resolved. However, anxiety can persist even after the event has passed and, in some cases, anxiety can escalate into a disorder causing physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms affecting day to day life ranging from mild anxiety (mild worry, manageable, temporary) to severe (intense excessive worrying, feeling of overwhelm, withdrawal, difficulty concentrating on simple tasks, feeling of dread, intense, recurrent and intrusive unwanted thoughts, feeling on the edge all the time).
